How to “Do” Berlin
Berlin is the now the most popular travel destination in Europe, beating old favourites like Portugal, Ibiza, Tenerife, Majorca, Barcelona, Paris, Crete and Dubrovnik etc. But Berlin is different to these places. Berlin has more to offer than just the usual holiday activities. I’m talking clubbing. And while you can still enjoy a great holiday for two weeks or so in Berlin, the ideal way to “do” Berlin is to stay here for the whole Summer.
Berlin is the new inter-railing / “year-in-australia”. Whilst one month is ideal for inter-railing and one year seems to be the most popular way to see Australia, staying a number of months in Berlin between May and September seems to become a trend. That’s because this is the best way to experience Berlin… as a Berliner. If you come for two weeks you can’t possibly discover all the best underground clubs. You will find some great places but to really know Berlin you need longer.
However, when you first arrive and are looking for a longer term apartment, you will need some short-term accommodation. The best option is a holiday apartment since, in the case of OTA-Berlin, you’ll have access to wireless Internet for searching for a place and a phone to ring up and enquire. You’ll also be right in the centre of Berlin, in and near to all the areas you would ideally want to live in. The best areas to live in are Prenzlauer Berg, Mitte, Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain and northern Neukoelln, known as Kreuzkoelln.
The great thing about Berlin is that it has a very low cost of living. It’s the only city in Western Europe with prices close to those of Eastern Europe. Of course, salaries are also much lower so you feel the benefit of the low prices if you are working here. However, if you save up a few thousand Euro, earned in a high salary country like Ireland or Britain, your money will go a long away in Berlin; approximate twice as far, in fact. Things like rent, alcoholic drinks, and food in restaurants are somewhere close to half the price of Ireland. This varies from location to location. Food in supermarkets is also much cheaper and sometimes things like fruit and veg are even less than half the price of Ireland. Shop smart, i.e. in Alda or Lidl, and you’ll be able to stick to quite a modest shopping budget.
Finally, the reason for coming in Summer is obvious. Summer weather in Berlin is usually fantastic, where as in Winter it is bitterly cold. To “do” Berlin properly and enjoy all the great things about social life in Berlin, like being able to drink in public, you need to come in Summer. Drinking a few beers in Goerlitzer Park or Mauer Park is one of my favourite things to do in Berlin.
