J S Bach – Voted best Composer Ever

In March of 2008 – the ‘OTA-Berlin Constituency Blog’ wrote the first of a series of ‘Composer  Mini-Biography’ –series starting with Johann Sebastian Bach entitled simply -’Bach’s place in history – A Titan’. [ http://www.ota-berlin.de/blog/composers/2008/05/21/biography-of-johann-sebastian-bach/ ]

It stated  “….Johann Sebastian Bach is rightly considered the greatest German composer. Admired for both its intellectual and technical depth, Bach’s music transcends his own baroque historical period and remains contemporary and fresh irrespective of time, no more so than in the 21st century- where if classical CD sales are any indication – his do a thriving business just behind Mozart but in front of everyone else.”

OTA-Berlin GmbH, ‘……. the Intelligent Apartment Alternative to Berlin Hotels’, names its Serviced Apartments in Berlin after composers – in its French, German, Spanish and Czech Composers buildings.

We named our first Apartment after JS Bach because – fittingly we thought – he deserved it.

Now circa 50 composers and apartments later we have no regrets about naming our first Berlin apartment after him. OTA-Berlin thought pretty highly of him then – and still do today and find it amusing that the NY Times agrees with us!

Earlier this week the New York Times’s Anthony Tommasini published its own list – http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/23/arts/music/23composers.html.

While this list is certainly not exhaustive nor correct in all of its listings- it is after all just an American list so one cannot expect too much- however he got this first name correct and we applaud him for it and his reasoning.

While any result is going to be subjective – and we do not agree with having included Igor Stravinsky and Claude Debussy but leaving out Dimitri Shostakovich and Antonin Dvorak . [?]

However while some of the chocies were ‘ faulty’ at least his reasoning  was objective and logical and we congratulate him for this effort.
