The hottest new area for exhibiting the artistic talents of young German and International artists is Wedding. Heidestrasse, near Hauptbahnhof, is a hive of creativity, the entire street consisting of converted warehouses, posing as galleries in the new cool part of Berlin. Tired of expensive, overly touristy Prenzlauer Berg and over the recent craze of Neukoelln, the latest district Berliners are flocking to is Wedding. And where the young and hip Berliners go, the masses eventually follow.
I can recommend the Tape Modern Gallery, house within Tape Club at 14 Heidestrasse, currently exhibiting, photographic and video art, installations and sculptures. The great thing about Tape is that you can browse the art exhibition, then head into the club, or just enjoy a few drinks in the exhibition hall itself.
Another location at which you will find regular exhibitions is Stattbad Wedding. An old community swimming pool at Gerichtestrasse 65, near Wedding U- and S-Bahn stations, the club has found a new function as a centre of art and music. There are two pools and at times these are used as the sets for installations, which generally have a sound-based theme, due to the unusual acoustics of the pools. Various club nights have been organised, which take place in the basement. The setting is awesome, with massive pipes and old swimming pool machinery providing the “decor”. The club is a decent size and even when full it was never difficult to get served at the bar.
Drinks were averagely priced at Eur3, including the Pfand (deposit) of 50c in the bottle. So far there is no door policy that I have noticed. Having attended a few club nights lately, I can see that the venue is getting increasingly popular again. By again, I mean that it was quite popular about one and a half years ago but it gradually died out and I believe it closed for a while.
But last week, the 4th February 2011, it was packed and there was also an art theme to the night, with various laser and led light-based art-installations in place throughout the club, which went well with the lights on the dancefloor and created an amazing atmosphere.
Speaking to the event organiser, clubs nights are set to become a regular event at Stattbad Wedding, and if last week is anything to go by, it’s going to continue to grow in popularity, which should attract ever-better DJs to the club.
