The Doner is snack number one in Berlin – down with the Curry-wurst – Long live the Doner!

According to the German version of Men’s Health the Doner Kebab has beat out currywurst, bratwurst, pizza and hamburgers to become the number one fast food for Germany in a 2008 poll.
This comes as no surprise to those of us living in Berlin. On almost every corner the savory enticing oder of roasting meat wafting on the breeze has caused more than one mouth to water. Some of us have even been so lucky to witness the up to 80 kilo thick slab of meat on a stick being delivered in the wee small hours of the morning, wrapped in plastic and carried on the shoulder of a burley delivery man.
As legend has it the Doner Kebab was invented here in Berlin in 1971 by a Turkish immigrant named Mahmut Aygun, yet another reason to appreciate social diversity and to thank our immigrant friends (of which I am one) for enriching our worlds by bringing their cultures into our lives.
It was of course originally a Turkish concept of seasoned meat roasting on a spit and served on a plate but the twist of turning it into fast food by slapping it onto some bread with salad and a dollop of yogurt sauce made it into the snack we all know and love today. In Germany there are over 15,000 Doner restaurants (or Imbiss as its known in German).
With the price at an astonishing 2.50 its still the staple of many a student diet. One of my favorites in Berlin is the Rosenthaler Grill at Rosenthaler Platz on the U7 but the finding of the best Doner Kebab is Berlin is a contentious argument which we will not get into here.
Instead I will simply tip my hat and say bravo to the Doner Kebab!
