A new black building at Rosa Luxemborg – coined by this blog as the “Black-Maze Building Berlin” but officially called just “L-40” has just been taken out of its scaffolding.
The result is a stunning black-mat convoluted concrete structure which fits snugly onto a very small lot in the heart of the new progressive cultural centre of Berlin -Mitte/Prenzlauer Berg .
This area exists and is centered in all directions outward from Rosa Luxemborg Platz where this property finds itself – just adjacent to the U-Bahn station which is visable on the middle photo.
The building consists of a parking garage underneath and a combination of apartments and offices.
What is most amazing about the building is the exact location – and the concomitant permission of the Berlin city to allow such a modern and iconoclast structure to be erected in what is really a late 19th century neighbourhood.
Many buildings had been bombed in close proximity to this location during WWII and the old DDR did very little to restore this particular area so it was really a combination of more deciding to start from scratch on this particular corner.
The challenge was to have a new structure fit in with what is there now – an amalgam of modern, late 19th century and mid 1950′s ’DDR -Cheapo’.
It remains however a wise and brave decision to combine the various centuries together like this – and in this case it seems to have worked on all levels.
The ‘Black-Maze Building Berlin’ has enhanced the whole area by its ‘wow-effect’ and stunning modern ‘look-at-me’ essence – but done in undertoned good taste.
The building does not try to be cute and does not incorporate any of the cheap so-called popular and ‘fashionable’ fads – the ‘modern embellishments’ which we all hate so much and which usually date a building 2 years after being built.
In the main this is a ‘one-off’ type of building – it is not a copy or part of a school or trend -and perhaps that is also fine and as it should be.
We welcome it at Rosa Luxemborg Platz and salute the city planners for having had the fortitude to allow it to be built here.
The architects also deserve some mention and perhaps most of the acclaim – and they are: Roger Bundschuh & Cosima von Bonin [ www.bundschuh.net].
We welcome this new dynamic structure to our area and are sure it will over time become an icon for which the area can be identified – the architects and the city have added to the aesthetic and archetechtural integrity of Berlin with the addition of this new building – Thank you!
More about this building at the rental/real-estate firm can be seen in German only at: http://www.l-40.de
We plan to take more pictures of the “Black-Maze Building Berlin” and this location later in the summer.
Your opinions about it are welcome.
