Berliner S-bahn problems continue – Fire in cable room between Treptower Park and Ostkreuz S-Bahn stations creates delays this morning / cause yet unknown – by Berlin observer and OTA-Berlin contributor Ms Cindy Su

May 22nd, 2012

After a fire inside an electrical control panel, in which several cables were seriously damaged S-Bahn traffic has been seriously affected early this morning.

The fire occurred around 0330 this morning between the newly renovated section of the Berliner S-Bahn at the bridge between the stations Treptow Park, and Ostkreuz and people in the area were woken by a single police helicopter which hovered around the area for at least 30 minutes.

Traffic on the S-Bahn this morning was once again strongly affected between Ostkreuz, Treptow Park, Sonnen Allee and Neukölln where ‘ersatz’ buses instead of trains will carry the rush-hour traffic. Affected is the traffic on the S-Bahn lines S41, S42, S45, S8 and S9.

It is not sure how long the delays may last, however the causes are localized and if past occurrences are anything to go by, probably traffic should get back to normal around noon.

Police said the fires was extinguished by S-Bahn personnel with a fire extinguisher itself and engineers immediately attempted to repair the damaged cables to restart the train traffic but without success so far as of 0900 hrs. today. How long the interference was initially unclear.

Unconfirmed reports speak of a police investigator indicating that there is strong evidence that the fire was intentionally started and its causes do not indicate it was due to any technical failure.

Almost a year ago, an arson attack had affected the nearby train station east cross the traffic significantly. And only yesterday a computer glitch shut down the S-Bahn in Berlin in the morning until the afternoon. For Berliners the S-Bahn chaos never seems to end.

The Berlin S-Bahn is a rapid transit system mostly above ground in and around Berlin, and has 15 lines integrated with the mostly underground U-Bahn. It is the backbone of Berlin’s rapid transport system.

Both the Berliner S-Bahn and U-Bahn are part of a unified fare system but have different operators. The S-Bahn is operated by S-Bahn Berlin GmbH, a subsidiary of the Deutsche Bahn, whilst the U-Bahn is run by BVG, the main public transit company for the city of Berlin.
