Berliner S-bahn fire in cable tunnel cause still unknown – fotos by Berlin observer and OTA-Berlin contributor Ms Cindy Su

After a fire inside an electrical control panel, in which several cables were seriously damaged S-Bahn traffic has been seriously affected early this morning. The fire occurred around 0330 this morning between the newly renovated section of the Berliner S-Bahn at the bridge between the stations Treptow Park, and Ostkreuz and people in the area were woken by a single police helicopter which hovered around the area for at least 30 minutes.

The electrical fire in the vicinity of the station Treptow Park - see foto - paralyzed the circle line to the east of the city completely earlier today.

While the DB/S-Bahn direction have already stated that there had been an arson attack on the Berlin S-Bahn, the Berlin police will not confirm the causes until they have completed their own investigations.

In the meantime an S-Bahn spokesman said that the disturbances will continue until Wednesday mid-morning, as the repair of the damaged cables will probably not be completed any sooner.

Our very intrepid reporter Ms Cindy Su – just happened to be in the neighbourhood and sent these photographs of workmen putting the cables back together again.
