Almost 60 years after his first concert in Europe, Daniel Barenboim is revisiting Vienna – and as usual with Barenboim – he will do so in style.
Starting yesterday evening Thursday, he will perform all the 9 symphonies of Anton Bruckner with the Staatskapelle Berlin, in the Vienna Musikverein hall. And at the invitation of and celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the Friends of Music Society – which is in itself a very great honor. See program below.
While Barenboim is better known of his cyclus performances of symphonies of Johannes Brahms and Gustav Mahler - it is just these 9 very wonderful works of Anton Bruckner that will highlight these concerts. They will be accompanied by artistically concomitant Mozart Piano Concerti.
Daniel Barenboim has the artistic ability and personal charisma to turn any performance of well-known and over-performed standard classical fare into something exciting. This series juxtaposing Mozart piano concertos and Bruckner symphonies is a good case in point and was presented earlier this year in London with generally good reviews. http://boulezian.blogspot.de/2012/04/staatskapelle-berlinbarenboim-mozart.html
About Mozart we need hardly say anything more than we did with our OTA-Berlin Mini-Composer series ….Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is rightly considered the sun in the constellation of music. Mozart is the most enduringly popular of classical composers and his works have become part of the standard concert and opera repertoires. http://www.ota-berlin.de/blog/05/21/biography-of-wolfgang-amadeus-mozart/
Until recently, Bruckner, other than his 7th symphony was not that well known outside of Europe. Since his death in 1896 his music was popular only in Europe and then specifically and primarily Vienna, Amsterdam and Berlin. In North America and the UK it was not often played, however that is recently changing and what attracts Barenboim to Bruckner is not just a singular phenomenon.
The joke about Bruckner having written the same symphony 9 times notwithstanding – Bruckner is in fact a combination of the harmonic language from Wagner type romanticism – with which he is so closely associated. It is more like a vast medieval atmosphere of religiosity – he wrote only for the glory of God – a very religious man he was indeed our Anton Bruckner.
Barenboim has said it is like playing music from 6 different centuries!
