EURO 2012 – Daily Report – DAY 11 – SPAIN beat CROATIA ….with some help from the worst referee at EURO 2012 and ITALY edge out EIRE …….just and go through as Group winners – Later today UKRAINE vs ENGLAND and SWEDEN vs FRANCE- by contributor OTA-Berlin Constituency Blog contributor Mr Filip van der Plas

June 19th, 2012

The 2012 UEFA European Football Championship, commonly referred to as Euro 2012, is now eleven days old and there has been a lot fo good and exciting football with 2 more teams through to the next phase .  I will be writing a daily blog article with the salient features of all the games. Please send us your thoughts and comments on the form below.  – Filip v d Plas-

SPAIN – CROATIA   1-0

Spanish substitute Jesus Navas’s scored in the 88th-minute and provided the winner to put Spain through to the quarter-finals in a very edgy kind of game in Gdansk.

Many would have to agree that the Spanish needed a nudge from the horrible German referee Stark – and it would seem he provided one. http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/em/startseite/europameisterschaft/2012/3/1122676/spielanalyse_kroatien_spanien-932.html

Sid Lowe in the UK Guardain wrote – “Spain and Croatia spent 88 minutes waiting for a goal. When it finally arrived, it was Jesús Navas who scored to send Spain to the top of Group C. They had required two superb saves from Iker Casillas to survive, while Croatia were also left bemoaning two possible penalties.”Jesús Navas eases Spain’s nerves against Croatia - http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/jun/18/euro-2012-croatia-spain-group-c

The Croats have now to go home and some criminal-idiot type of fans –not most but a few -will not be missed. However their very good team and their coach will be missed.

They, like Holland have to get ready for the upcoming 2014 World Cup qualifiers in Brazil and this will happen without their coach Bilic – his tenure as coach ended with the departure of his team from EURO 2012.

World and European champion Spain will play this coming Saturday in the quarterfinals. Then they play against the Second in Group D – to be determined between France, England and co-hosts Ukraine.

Referee was biased towards Spain, says Croatia captain -http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/jun/20/euro-2012-croatia-spain-referee

The Croatian team consisted of ; Pletikosa – Srna , Corluka , Schildenfeld ,Strinic, Vukojevic , Rakitic , Modric , Perisic, Mandzukic , and Jelavic

Spanish team consisted of ; Casillas, Arbeloa , Piqué , Sergio Ramos , Jordi Alba – Busquets , Xabi Alonso Xavier Hernández i Creus, Silva , Iniesta and Fernando Torres

A good German summary of this game can be found on Kicker.de http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/em/startseite/europameisterschaft/2012/3/1122676/spielanalyse_kroatien_spanien-932.html

 ITALY  - EIRE   2-0

Italy are able to advance at Euro 2012 ….just…….it seems ……by the skin of their teeth!

Italian substitute Mario Balotelli’s wonderful goal provided the go-through that Italy needed to go to the top of their group. It was a goal as a work of art- acrobatically wrapping the ball around Irish defender O’Shea in mid-air, as he took the ball from a corner provided by Alessandro Diamanti.

Balotelli was absolutely essential for this win and Italian coach Prandelli’s decision to play him – even late in the game was smart because without Balotelli Italy looks very unsure.

Mario Balotelli secures Italy’s passage against Ireland -http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/jun/18/euro-2012-italy-republic-ireland-group-c

The Italian team consisted of ; Buffon, Bonucci ,de Rossi ,Chiellini , Pirlo , Maggio , Marchisio , T. Motta , Giaccherini ,Balotelli , and Cassano

The Irish team consisted of ; Given, O’Shea, Dunne, St. Ledger, S. Ward, Whelan, Andrews, Duff, McGeady, Cox and Keane.
