EURO 2012 Fallout – Dutch Coach first EURO 2012 casualty – Bert van Marwijk does the right thing and resigns as Dutch National Coach – by contributor Mr Filip van der Plas

June 28th, 2012

The 2012 UEFA European Football Championship, commonly referred to as Euro 2012, is now six days old and for the 2nd  time we will see teams play thier 2nd set of games. There has been a lot fo good exciting football – we have now seen all the teams and groups in action.    I will be writing a daily blog article with the salient features of all the games. Please send us your thoughts and comments on the form below.  – Filip v d Plas-

Bert van Marwijk is no longer coach of the Dutch national football team the the Dutch football federation – KNVB announced earlier today.

Bert van Marwijk took the decision after returning to the Netherlands after a fatefull EURO 2012 where his team scored only two goals and did not even win one game – never mind tie a game.

Van Marwijk resigned after consultations with the Dutch Football Federation , KNVB who like most fat & dumb football associations around the world are ususally detached from reality and especially know very little about football.

Bert Van Marwijk’s resignation is to be welcomed, firstly because van Marwijk has done the correct thing and taken the correct consequence of his failing with the team. He is obviously a man of some principal because he could easily have stayed.

However he did not make enough changes to both the team and the playing style after some disasterous results – starting with their loss to Sweden in the last EURO qualifier. He failed to see that some players were ‘past their due date’ – especially the defense which were a complete disaster – the useless goofy Dutch defensive duo of Mathijsen and Heitinga for example.

It would have been better to take some more younger inexperienced players from the Dutch league earlier on and played them during the qualification stages – instead he kept to the same mundane group and refused to see that this group had also changed, were older and the drive was simply not there anymore.

Van Marwijk did not change with the times – and he paid the price and this is unfortunate – however professional sports is tough and van Marwijk knows this better than most and we wish him well.

Van Marwijk, had taken over from former Dutch star Marco van Basten in 2008, and then led the Netherlands all the way to the World Cup final in South Africa – but his seemingly negative tactics and non-attacking style led to a lot of Dutch media criticism, including from the great former Dutch legend Johann Cruyff.

Van Marwijk’s successor is not yet known but he should be in place before the Netherlands plays a friendly against Belgium on 15th August.

A month later the qualifiers against Turkey (home on September 7th) and Hungary (away 11th September) on the program.
