‘Canada Day’ - ‘Fête du Canada’ is July 1st, Canada’s national day, a federal statutory holiday celebrating the anniversary of the July 1, 1867, enactment of the British North America Act – otherwise known as the ‘ Constitution Act, 1867′, -which united the two British colonies and a province of the British Empire into one single country called ‘Canada’.
Canada generally plays a positive role in the world – as a meeting point of diverse international peoples it has over the last hundred years welcomed both the poor and disenfranchised as well as others seeking to build a future for their families in a huge rich country in need of a population.
In recent years, the international view of Canada as a neutral arbiter and peace maker whose views could be taken at face value and respected have suffered various blows – its integrity is no longer a given and it will take many years to regain its former highly regarded position.
Reason for this back-sliding is the present Conservative government and more specifically its leader ‘Steve’ [as his good friend Bush called him!] Harper.
Harper is a divisive, petty and abrasive politician - albeit a cunning one - with little respect for democratic process and the rules of Parliament .
The sooner we see the last of Mr Harper as PM the better for Canada.
Canada Day observances take place throughout Canada as well as internationally -for local Berlin activities today pls see;

Dear OTA-Berlin
We enjoyed our last 5 days in Berlin.
We have concluded that there were three contributing factors-
1-the location of the suite in Berlin
2-the furnishings + cleanliness of the OTA- Berlin suite
3-the weather
We figure that if we did not have factors 1 + 2 above we would not have appreciated 3.
So take a bow for all three and see you again next year!
