Dienstagswelt at M.I.K.Z. – Berlin’s Best Tuesday Clubbing?

It’s only Tuesday but it’s been a terribly long week already – you had a blue Monday, a chaotic Tuesday, and now you just want to go clubbing. Maybe Wednesday is a holiday, maybe you will call in sick from work tomorrow, or maybe you just don’t work period. Whatever the matter is, you decide to go out. Now the question arises: where do you go on a Tuesday night to party in Berlin?

Dienstagswelt (Tuesday’s world) has been around a long time – it was formerly found around the corner from its current address in the likes of the Cassiopeia complex. It, for undisclosed reasons, moved over to M.I.K.Z. where it has become a staple of Berlin’s storied nightlife. MIKZ itself was created to be a ‘cultural center’ by the former district mayor Franz Schulz, and to that effect during the week hosts cultural events, such as workshops, courses and lectures during the daytime. During the night it offers a different kind of ‘cultural experience.’

M.I.K.Z. (Multifunktionales Internationales Kultur Zentrum) has multiple floors and levels, depending on how many are open each night, and does quite an impressive job securing popular DJs at least once a week. It is not open every Friday and Saturday but rather every Tuesday and Wednesday and some Friday and Saturdays. The same DJs that one might see at Katerholzig, ie Nico Stojan, Hanne & Lore etc al tend to play on the special events on weekends. On weeknights lesser known DJs are typically showcased, which however, does not mean they are not often especially good.

When you first arrive at the entrance to M.I.K.Z. on whatever particular Tuesday, you will shuffle towards what looks like an alley illuminated by a blinding light near a door, in front of which a short line of people might exist. Multiple bouncers – many of whom you could see at other clubs on different nights – will stand there and check IDs, accept or reject guests, and eventually let most in. M.I.K.Z. does not possess a particularly discriminating door – groups of men generally will pass through – but one never knows.

Inside the lower dancefloor is the main area on Tuesdays, and no matter what time you arrive, it will be roughly 75% male. This is valid for the entire club. For whatever reason, men in their twenties flock to Dienstagswelt to dance under the strobe lights. The upper floor opens later and often features a more house-style music – the beats don’t thump quite as hard – which fills around 4am without becoming overstuffed.

The party will not show signs of slowing until between 6am and 7am, at which point pretty much all of the females, except for a few who ahem lost track of time, will have vacated the establishment. This excludes of course the female bartenders, who are friendly enough, and serve drinks that are reasonably priced.

Don’t go to M.I.K.Z. on a Tuesday expecting the party of your life, the Berlin party that will become legend for the next decade, or a party with lots of members of the female gender, but do go expecting some authentic Berlin electro, fair entry and drink prices, and the chance to dance unencumbered on a lovely Wednesday morning like the rest of the world, the world outside Dienstagswelt, is simply an illusion.

Read Cindy’s latest blog against the new GEMA proposals which will kill Berlin Night life as we know it -  http://www.ota-berlin.de/blog/07/06/gema-will-new-laws-in-2013-ruin-berlins-legendary-party-world-by-ota-berlin-constituency-blog-contributor-ms-cindy-su/

Berlin club scene opposes Gema!!!! More than 5,000 people demonstrated on Monday evening in front of the club in Prenzlauer Berg Frannz against the new tariff proposal by the Gema. The club itself organized the collecting society of their members meeting.  http://www.tagesspiegel.de/berlin/video-berliner-clubszene-beschallt-gema/6799154.html

The  Gema’s image of a ‘charitable organization’ that cares about the welfare of all copyrights is somewhat misleading – it is in fact quite reactionary . In truth, the big money just go to the top as Dieter Bohlen and Co. About 65 percent of the royalty-flowing dividends at five percent of the members.

Well, that article do carry a lot of mistakes:
    * The MIKZ wasn’t created by mayor Franz Schulz.
    * Dienstagswelt was @ RAW-tempel before it moves some hundert yards down the road. It was for reason that the managment of RAW.tempel changed – which turned the former hotspot for alternative culture (including various musical styles and cultural activities) into a psytrance club.
    * MIKZ is a classical Technoclub. There’s not much else going on at MIKZ than Techno-/ Techhouse- and House- music events – except from some “Ravesport” (Yoga with Techno) every Thursday, once a while some live concerts earlier the night (before parties start) and some occasional side programm at the weekend events. Numbers of concerts are said to be increased following some announced technical developments in the future.
    * The MIKZ is always open on FR/Sa but only once a month on Wednesdays.
    * Oztside MIKZ might be some pattern visuals to indicate that somethings going on at the end of the yard.
    * The mix of sexes isn’t particulary different from most other club events in Berlin. In sum there is a majority of male visitors – esp. in the morning hours – but the mix of sexes also depends quite a lot on the programm.
    * Dienstagswelt is def the best visited electronic music event of this town on Tuesdays – and maybe the rest of the world… True: don’t expect the party of your life – but you get far the best party at this day of the week.
