Chancellor Angela Merkel has been voted ‘OTA-Berlin Constituency Blog’ personage of the year 2011 by the editorial staff.
Ms Merkel knows something about the word ‘ unity’ coming from the formerly divided nation of Germany and now as the de-facto leader of the Euro-zone countries she is actively keeping the various states of Europe together on the correct path in overcoming its current financial obstacles – some self made European ones but mainly imposed problems from outside.
So popular has she become that she has been even joined Ken and Barbie and has been eternalized in plastic form with a Merkel Barbie form doll. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/feb/06/angela-merkel-barbie-doll
With nothing ‘except a Doctorate in Quantum Chemistry’, and obtaining a fluency in Russian along the way – not many would have given her even half a chance of staying as German leader for a 2nd term never mind providing a leadership role in the otherwise gothic and thankless job of what is EU politics.
She has already become the longest serving leader of an G8 country and Ms. Merkel is providing the correct type of leadership which is now needed in the EU.
It has been reported recently that ‘s in order to save the Euro’ Ms Merkel pushed actively for the removal of the former Italian premier , the lecherous reprobate septuagenarian Silvio Berlusconi . http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/merkel-under-fire-over-phone-bid-to-oust-berlusconi-6283345.html
The rest of Europe and probably most of Italy and even the world will applaud her for this!
She has said that Germany wants to lead by example and convince and not coerce other countries to accept what she thinks are the correct ways to combat the financial debt crisis to avoid such problems in the future.
Whether she is right – her CDU party is a very right-wing group in Germany and certainly does not represent the majority – still remains to be seen. However even the Polish PM has said he never thought he would be calling for a stronger Germany in Europe – but these were strange times indeed and he admited that he was in fact doing that just now.
We admire Ms Merkel’s steadfast resolve and courage in these harrowing times for the Euro currency in particular and the EU generally – you may not like the CDU politics but one must admire her ability and drive.
Therein lies the reason we have chosen her as the ‘OTA-Berlin Constituency Blog’ Personage of the Year 2011.
If there is a counter to ‘Personage of the Year‘ or ‘non-personage of the year’ or ‘loser of the year’ then that prize must certainly go to the disgraced former German defence minister Zu Guttenberg who is trying to come back into German politics via the EU.http://www.thelocal.de/politics/20111230-39807.html
After the copying scandal -he basically ‘bought’ a PhD thesis and was caught cheating by substituting other peoples work as his own- Guttenberg fled Germany and made a quick retreat to friendlier waters in the relative safety of US and Canada campuses where he dawned a new ‘no-glasses’ look.
He seems to think people in Germany will forgive and forget his dishonesty – never mind his stupid right-wing idiot’s idea to have a Ronald Reagan strasse in Berlin – one loser admires another loser. http://www.ota-berlin.de/blog/02/08/berlin-and-europe-owe-nothing-to-mr-reagan-%E2%80%98ota-berlin-constituency-blog%E2%80%99-contributor-emil-hoogensteyn-reports-from-berlin/
He is attempting a political comeback of sorts with the EU asking him to become an assistant to Neelie Kroes, the EU’s commissioner for digital affairs.
Of all things – yes reality is stranger than fiction- to ‘to advise her on promoting Internet freedom in undemocratic countries.’ Well if someone knows how to be devious with the internet he is certainly the one.
Germany and Europe need more Merkel and less zu Guttenberg.
Even the good Baron zu Guttenberg has no doll model yet molded after him– however with his straight arms and a head that can only turn right, a plastic molded haircut and a plastic personality to match his CSU masters are probably already designing one – and without glasses!
