German government goes against public opinion and boosts Afghan troop mission – slightly

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

 Berlin   28-02-2010

During yesterdays Bundestag parliamentary session,   the’ Linke’ party members held up placards with the names of civilian victims of the German air force attack in Kunduz last year– and by doing so represented the majority of Germans who see nothing good coming  from their countries long Afghan involvement.

Christine Buchholz, a member of parliament and deputy chairwoman of ‘ Die Linke’ – Left Party- said that Germany is taking part in a war being waged against the population of Afghanistan and that Germany has no right being there.

The protest came in the middle of a parliamentary debate on extending Germany’s nine-year military mission to Afghanistan by a further year.

The protest saw them banned temporarily from the Bundestag for breaching parliamentary rules and may have been a bit melodramatic.

However this was no routine vote – the’ Linke’ MPs held up some 70 signs with names of Afghani victims – they called it a dignified way to remember individual people with the names of those who have died.

The Bundestag has 622 members in total and in this case 429 MPs voted for and 111 against and 46 withheld their vote – which meant that in total 16 fewer votes in favour than last time – which will allow troop numbers to be increased by 850 to a total number of 5,350.

There is strong public resentment towards the Afghan mission and this has been further hardened since last year’s bombing of two petrol tankers near Kunduz.

In that incident which killed about 140 people -of which about 120 were innocent civilians- German troops took responsibility for what turned out to be a complete military, humanitarian and public relations disaster for Germany and its Army.

Around 70% of Germans want its soldiers to pull out, according to a December poll for ARD public television, up by 12 % in the last 3 months.

The right-wing CDU/CSU and FDP parties were joined by most – but not all – of the opposition Social Democrat Labour party.

In what can only be described as typical SPD opportunistic double-speak Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the SPD’s Bundestag leader said the party finally voted in favor of the government’s plan in order  to help “set the points for ending the mission”  [sic]in Afghanistan – whatever that illogical spin may mean.

The expulsion of the entire 76-member Left parliamentary party – a first in the Bundestag- shows how controversial Germany’s first post-war military deployment outside Europe is and remains.

Parliamentary expulsions in the Bundestag are a very rare occurrence but history has proven to be on the side of those who were expelled.

In 1949 the SPD chief Schumacher was thrown out for calling Konrad Adenauer the ‘Allied Chancellor’- an allusion to the fact that Adenauer was in fact a willing dupe of the US – which was true.

The most well-known expulsion was in 1984 during a heated exchange between the Bundestag president and the then Green Party MP Joschka Fischer.

“With permission, Mr President, you’re an asshole,” said Mr Fischer, who was then subsequently expelled for 2 days.

It had been reported at the time that Mr Fischer was in fact expelled for revealing a state-secret which all those in Parliment already knew to be the case!

Berlin government of Angela Merkel’s popularity sinks – lets attack the Swiss!

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Berlin  27-02-2010

The Merkel government has taken an increasingly tough line on tax evasion since its popularity in the polls starting dropping – but if one is to believe the government - this increased tax scrutiny has occured ostensibly been the result of the so-called ‘global financial crisis’  which has severly strained the German state coffers.

Despite loud protests from within and outside Germany, the Berlin government has indicated it will pay cash for stolen Swiss bank data with undeclared holdings by German citizens.

German tax evaders having ‘come clean’ about their Swiss bank holdings – nearly 5900 citizens so far- will provide about 500 million Euros in lost tax revenues financial authorities have indicated today in Berlin.

According to German law, tax evaders who turn themselves in will not be prosecuted, however they will have to pay back the   avoided taxes.

How the present, or future German government will react when other foreign governments start openly inducing and promoting criminal behaviour in order to obtain information on German companies, individuals or state institutions – is not clear.

However we can already hear the loud shrill coming from Berlin  in years to come were anyone to try this same opportunistic tactic against the German state.

The Swiss President –a rotational post presently held by Doris Leuthard, the country’s economics minister – said on the weekend that a state based on the rule of law should not use illegal data.

So far, Merkel’s own southern German clan – a sour sauce mix of the right-wing CDU &CSU parties – has been largely against the purchases. The head of the CSU Michelbach said the state should try to obtain the data legally, with the aid of the Swiss authorities.

The majority of German tax evaders have been from the west of the country, and in comparison, less than 80 have come from the six former eastern states, excluding Berlin.

It has been estimated that private individual Germans have an estimated 200 billion Euros of undeclared funds in Switzerland.

Jubiläums–Konzert am Sonntag, 28. Februar 2010, 17.00 Uhr – Berlin Mitte

Berlin   26-02-2010

Madalina Pasol, Andras Vermesy, Catalin Serban, Roxana Buga – Klavier,

Monica Garcia Albea – Mezzosopran

Bogdan Jianu – Cello

Herzlichst, Madalina Pasol

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Defense representatives from the 7 countries who are working to find a deal on financing the long-delayed program EADS/Airbus A400M military transport plane will meet next Friday in Berlin…

Spain, where the plane will be assembled is deeply involved with the success of the project. Its deputy defense minister Mendez has said that other A400M purchasing defense ministers will meet March 5th to discuss technical details and on their financial offer to EADS/Airbus.

Mendez pointed out that participant countries must resolve questions surrounding the structure of 1.5 billion Euro in credit guarantees – along with 2 billion Euro for new financing.

Hertha Berlin get a good thrashing from Benefica

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Berlin    24-02-2010

Two goals by the Paraguauan forward  Cardozo pushed Benfica to a 4-0 win over Hertha Berlin on Tuesday – they hereby clinch a place in the last 16 of the Europa Cup.

Benfica got its first goal when the Argentine Saviola passed to his fellow compatriot Aimar in the 25th minute and he duly passed the Berlin keeper Jaroslav Drobny with a great through ball.

Hertha Berlin – presently the Bundesliga’s bottom club – did not even manage to get a consolation goal and ended the two game fixture with a miserable 5-1 aggregate loss.

Berlin 22-02-2010

Ganz herzlich

Christoph Schreiber

American Documentary ‘S.O.S. – State of Security’ makes World Premier at Berlinale

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

Berlin   20 – 02 -2010

The American film ‘S.O.S./State of Security’ – a documentary that explores gaps in U.S. security from the point of view of an insider who had spotted problems before the 9/11 attacks- made its world debut in Berlin yesterday at the ‘Berlinale’ film festival.

The movie deals with the trials and tribulations of a Kennedy-era idealist and former White House security adviser whose detailed recommendations go unheeded. He criticizes the over-reliance by intelligence experts on technology and not enough on foreign expertise and human intelligence gathering abroad which leaves the US exposed – despite vast amounts of money thrown at the sector.

Making its world premiere at the Berlinale festival, the documentary makes it very clear where its political sympathy lie and that is very far from the bellicose and feeble-minded former US administration Bush/Cheney.

The film makes the point that successful security requires open social debate and discussion to defeat extremist ideology in public debate – a debate where tolerant, liberal and open societies have the advantage.

‘S.O.S./State of Security’ also argues to combat terrorism successfully it will first have to find a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict which is the greatest cause of the US being alienated by Muslims worldwide

The film describes weaknesses in airport and other  infrastructure security in the US – a lack of foreign expertise and human intelligence  – which leaves the US over exposed despite massive investment in the sector.

The film makes the point that successful security requires open social debate and discussion to defeat extremist ideology – a debate wherein  tolerant, liberal and open societies would have the advantage.

The director of the film Michele Ohayon – who grew up in Israel – said the movie is about those who think the best way to fight terrorism is in a more effective and intelligent manner than relying on purely military means.

Ohayon argues -logically and astutely-  that to combat terrorism successfully there will first have to be a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict which is the greatest cause of the US being alienated by Muslims worldwide.
