Berlin  15 -02-2010

Most people would be forgiven if they thought that Simon Rattle – chief conductor of the ‘Berlin Phiharmonie’ -was the only British voice who actively adds to Berlin’s cultural life.

However the Scottish-born Donald Runnicles, has for its current season been named ‘Generalmusikdirektor ‘ [conductor and musical director] of the ‘ Deutsche Oper’ - West Berlin’s renown opera house.

The Good Burghers of Dresden Deny Far-Right losers entry to City Centre

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

Berlin    16-02-2010

Around 11,000 people in Dresden formed a human chain on Saturday to stop the neandrathal German neo-Nazis from staging a march - ostensibly to remember victims of the Allied air raid that raised the city 65 years ago.

The loser right-wing neo-Nazis, had gathered at Dresden’s Neustadt railway station thinking they could with impunity stage a rally. Other right-wing ding-bats from Scandinavia and [...] Continue Reading…

London reviews for Daniel Barenboim & Staatskapelle Berlin -Ludwig van Beethoven Piano Concerto Cyclus

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Berlin  14-02-2010

If one goes by the outstanding reviews from London’s newspaper critics, – notorious for their finicky and miserly reviews -then Barenboim and the Staatskapelle orchestra may well consider this London outing an impressive success.

In his last appearance in London, two years ago Barenboim played all of the Beethoven’s piano sonatas – back to back in eight concerts – considered by many [...] Continue Reading…

Germany would like to repeat its last performance at Vancouver Winter Olympics

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

Berlin   13-02-2010

There was great fanfare, when the opening ceremonies began Friday night in Vancouver with a spectacle worthy of former  Olympic games.

A glittering opening ceremony at  ‘BC Place’ Stadium featured native North American first nations music and dance, followed by a procession of the athletes.

The fervor, glitter and exuberance which surround all opening ceremonies were thought to be in jeopardy and to become marred by [...] Continue Reading…

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Berlin  12-02-2010

Erika Steinbach, the right-wing leader of ‘the expelled’ -or Germans driven from Eastern Europe after 1945 – has agreed with the Merkel government not to seek nomination to the board organising the planned ‘Expulsion Museum’ in Berlin.

What looked to becoming a major dispute with neighbour Poland, over a future Berlin museum seems to have been avoided – for the time being.

The [...] Continue Reading…

Berlin brokered Euro-zone Loan guarantee for Greece – long-term or band-aid solution?

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Berlin  11-02-2010

A number of loan- guarantees set up by Germany seems, for the moment at least, to provide a solution to the Greek state budget deficit crisis.

Germany and France are both taking the lead in helping Greece as long as it sticks to a program to reduce the EU’s biggest single-member’s budget deficit ever.

EU officials have insisted that no ‘bailout’ was being discussed [...] Continue Reading…
