Today, now that the Easter holidays are over, Berlin S-Bahn passengers who transverse the S41 and S42 Ring at Ostkreuz, will have a completely new view of the station.

As of 0400hrs this morning April 16th the busy station will show her new face – namely her new main hall as in the foto above. [We will update the foto last this week]

While not all work has been completed yet –another 2 years to complete the Southern extension – it will be a major achievement in its own right.

As has been pointed out before on this blog – you may not agree with some things in Germany – but when they do infrastructure, they do it properly, do not cut corners and think about users decades from now.

Emphasis this evening will be on the Prussian King Friedrich II, the Great, the old man, and now, on his 300th Birthday, he is almost everywhere - on the front pages of stores, in the windows of bookstores, exhibitions and television documentaries and now even at the Long Night of Museums. With good reason, as we find.

For Frederick II, more than any other personality shaped the cultural identity of the Berlin and Brandenburg and left its traces in the collections of several museums and collections.

About seventy buildings take on this 30th Long Night of the Museums, and many of them will remember with musical and literary programs or special tours to this enlightened and very special ruler.

On the famous boulevard Unter den Linden, at the famous equestrian statue of the King, there is a be lazer large-screen projection with traditional sayings of Frederick in both French and German and - if the weather cooperates - a huge snow sculpture.

The UK based Guardian and its travel writer Rory MacLean have announced their selection of the top 10 best museums in Berlin.
We take up their list and would like our readers to add their own comments onto our blog and either commend their list or pooh-pooh it if you feel strongly and/or want to recommend your
own.
The curry wurst museum is probably their WURST choice. There are some pretty stupid choices there indeed.
The Pergamon Museum did not even make the list, nor did the important Karlshorst German Russian Museum where the armistice which ended the end of the 2nd World War was officially signed. Another great museum is the German Historical Museum which was left out..........in favour of curry-wurst [!].
As usual with the Guardian the list is subjectively UK biased and more of the sort of historical pabulum it feeds its reader Their list is very subjective and pro-American post cold-war point of view with absolutely no idea of history unless it is their own history – sort of like Britain won WWII.
While anyone who has studied history will come to the conclusion that it was in fact the then Soviet Union who ended the 3rd Reich – and yes with help from both its allies the US and the UK.
However the cold war period was also one of those phases of world history that can be looked at from 2 points of view – and the Guardian is not so interested in looking deeply into this aspect of modern history – a time when both the US and the former USSR where both guilty of subverting freedom in Europe.

The Berliner Dom (and the unfortunate Kaiser who had it built)The Berliner Dom is certainly one of the most conspicuous buildings in Berlin. It is perhaps the most striking example of the massive building projects that the Hohenzollern family undertook in their attempts to turn Berlin into a capital to rival any other in Europe. The results of their ambition still line Unter den Linden and fill the Museum Island today.

At first sight, one would suspect the Berliner Dom, with its opulent Renaissance style, to be one of the oldest of these landmark buildings. It is, however, the youngest: it was only completed in 1905. Its commissioner, Kaiser Wilhem II, would be the last ruling member of Hohenzollern family. He hoped to one day be buried in it. History, however, had something else in store for him.

The place where the cathedral now stands had been the site of the church of the resident ruling family since the late Middle Ages. The church that stood there when Wilhelm II came to power dated from the 1820s, had been out of style for quite a while and at any rate was deemed far too modest by the ever more powerful and ambitious Hohenzollerns. Wilhelm II finally decided to have it torn down and replaced with something more impressive. He envisioned a building which could rival the Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome – an interesting choice to find inspiration, as the Hohenzollerns adhered to the Prussian protestant church!

From Aarhus it takes only 6 or 7 hours including lunch and pee breaks before you are in the heart of Berlin. The trip could even be done faster if we had not chosen to follow the route that we had printed from the Internet. It went very well with driving on the highway south of Hamburg and then turn east towards Berlin. But just before Berlin we got lost and things went wrong. It almost requires a background as a semi-professional orientation runs to navigate the four-five pages long itinerary.

We drove quite simply lost in the explanation, so we decided to bite the bullet and go back via the highway. And how hard could it be. We should just go straight to Alexanderplatz via Prentzlauer Allee, once right at Torstraße and once again right on Schönhauser Allee, so we were promoting. A good city map paired with a little common sense beats Internet. [ We would highly recomend ‚TomTom‘ or Garmin GPS system!]

A city like Berlin, with its 3.8 million. inhabitants offers obviously a wealth of accommodation options for every budget. And here is the Internet to turn a big help. We - two adults and an adolescent son - had chosen to rent an apartment in Old Town Apartments Berlin Gmb, [OTA Berlin] as one can get in touch with via e-mail address or info@ota-berlin.de The address belongs to the company's friendly, young assistant Boris, whose boss is an equally friendly Dutchman with football as his passion.
