Conductor Thomas Hengelbrock led his vibrant orchestra masterfully with the zest, power and sensitivity both of these works demand. The horns but especially the wind sections – in Brahms the oboe and flute- were absolutely world class.
The strings were, under the circumstances of an almost evaporating acoustic, well managed and did what they had to do and held everything together. Stefan Wagner the ‘Konzertmeister’ and both Paulus van der Merwe and Kalev Kuljusas as solo-Oboists were magnificent in the Brahms.
The Hamburg Brahms would have been proud of this Hamburg orchestra – often times complacent Berlin orchestras please take note – you have worthy competition in Hamburg!

This coming Friday the 17th February at 2030hrs there is a concerto for violin, viola, piano and chamber orchestra by the Latvian violinist Monta Wermann.
The instrumentation is unusual for the Piano Salon Christophori , but extremely interesting nonetheless.
Violinist Monta Wermann has in recent years has been mainly known for traveling a lot with world violin star Gidon Kremer and the Kremerata Baltica. Conductor Janis Liepins, Avishai Chameides on the viola, and concert pianist Sorin Creciun are all active musicians in Berlin at the orchestra of the German opera.
The program consists of chamber music by Mozart, one of the most beautiful violin sonatas by Bach at all, and Ernst Bloch's Baal Shem and the first Concerto for violin and chamber orchestra by Peteris Vasks.
In view of the program and the performers……….we can look forward for sure to an overwhelmingly great sound experience!

As part of its series "Broadening the Scope of Choral Music" the Berlin Radio Choir will present Johannes Brahms' "German Requiem" in what can best be described as ‘ in a new light’.
Whether it is needs a ‘new-light’ is questionable however ........let them go for it!
Jochen Sandig and an artistic team from ‘ Sasha Waltz & Guests’ intend to develop a "human requiem" choreographed to the text, the sound, in body and space.
The choir will be directed into the large space onto a moving sort of stage wherein also the audience will be moved – both spiritually I hope but also physically!
The intention is to heighten the traditional concert experience and raise it by one level expand it by one dimension. Brahms would probably have approved of that.

Brahms' Requiem is not a funeral Mass in the traditional sense – it is not a weepy kind of funeral hymn for the dead but rather a solemn elegy to give comfort to the living. Brahms once said in the later stage of his life when many of his friends and acquaintances were dying that ‘life takes away much more than death ever can’ here referring to the fact that when close friends died a part of him went with them and his own passing would be nothing by comparison.

We have found that our chamber-music evenings are among our most visited and most moving so …here we go again!
This week Thursday, 02nd of February at 2030 hrs. The Piano Salon will present some amazing chamber music. We would like to invite you to a concert of which we have very high expectations, because once again we have a very young, beautiful, talented and already famous violinist - playing on a very old and not so beautiful – but very old, sonorous and important violin. This all to be accompanied by her equally stunning sister -Lea Birringer -will be heard on the piano. By this I do not mean she will be literally ‘on the piano’ but she will be playing the instrument, in this case also a period instrument.

So come and hear –and see - the sisters Birringer, Lea and Esther -both of whom have won many competitions and are among the most important German young chamber music duo. In particular, the violinist Lea has a great reputation which is rare for such a young player.

With a little luck a direct flight from Salzburg to Berlin today would take about 1 hour and 20 minutes. However when Mozart took it about 223 years ago it would have taken a good 3 weeks!

Back then he would have had to travel through Brno, Prague, Dresden, Leipzig and then on to Berlin. And he came with great expectations in that spring to Berlin - as usual he was in his impecunious state -habitually plagued by money problems through-out his life.

But it was not Berlin he wanted to visit as such but rather Potsdam. Mozart came with great expectations in the spring in Berlin.

Potsdam because that is where he was hoping to obtain some commissions and obtain some new revenue source to support his family by applying directly with the Prussian ruler Frederick the Great – Fredrich II – who as it happens has a birthday just 3 days before Wolfgang!

The main gist of the entire trip was to meet the monarch himself and Mozart was sure that such a face-to-face meeting would convince his potential future patron of his ability and good will – something similar which a meeting with Johann Sebastian Bach achieved. http://www.ota-berlin.de/blog/05/21/biography-of-johann-sebastian-bach/

However it was not to be, whether through the court intrigue of a court musician who was jealous of losing out to Mozart in future musical orders or whether Frederick was just not in one of his musical moods – it seems we will never know exactly.
