  Berlin 30-01-2010

Almost 80 percent – four in five Germans – oppose Berlin’s plans to increase its number of troops in Afghanistan.

This, according to a poll released Wednesday, a day before the international London conference on Afghanistan.

Germany presently has 4,300 troops in the northern part of the Afghanistan, the third largest contingent in the US led mission.

The number of German defence personnel in [...] Continue Reading…

Foreign Policy Challenges for Berlin – Afghanistan and Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Berlin    25-01-2010

There are some foreign policies that Angela Merkel seems not to like to talk about. One is Afghanistan and the other is the on-going strife between Israelis and Palestinians.

While Merkel seems willing to go against the very strong public will of the German electorate and increase Germany’s troop numbers in Afghanistan, she lacks the courage to oppose the ultra-nationalist, right-wing Israeli [...] Continue Reading…

Air Strike Blunder continues to stalk Merkel government

Monday, December 14th, 2009

A disagreement over a deadly airstrike in Afghanistan this September hangs heavily over the newly elected coalition government of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. It may yet prove to be the undoing of her previously held support to meet a US request to send more German troops.

Germany presently has 4,500 soldiers in the country.

The botched airstrike on two fuel trucks – which had [...] Continue Reading…

Germany takes a principled stand and dares to attack Israel’s aggressive settlement plan

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Germany – for what almost seems like the first time – has today publicly criticised Israeli plans to build settlements in the occupied West Bank. This a week before both countries’ leaders will meet in Berlin.

The modern Germany Federal Republic has a special bond with Israel and has always been extra careful to avoid any criticism of the country. The legacy of [...] Continue Reading…

Merkel popularity will be tested on extension of German Afghan mission

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

The CDU right-wing government of Angela Merkel has in principal approved a one-year extension of its NATO deployment force in Afghanistan,  however the size of troop level will stay the same.

The cabinet decision will have to be confirmed by the German Parliament next month  when the current mandate expires. For various reasons -probably related to back-door agreements with the US-  this decision [...] Continue Reading…

Chancellor Merkel Says <Wurst> yet to come

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

A “reality-sandwich” was delivered to the German people earlier today by the leader of their government Angela Merkel. This after the last couple of days of euphoric international attention and celebration to commemorate the reunification of the two Germanys, 20 years ago. She did not mince her words when she addressed the German Parliament and gave a rather pessimistic review of the [...] Continue Reading…

One sixth of voters in last federal election in Germany would now have voted differently

Monday, November 9th, 2009

After winning the federal election on 27th September, circa 1/6th of the electorate now say they would vote differently if given the choice again – and would chose another political party.
It has also become clear since the election that Chancellor Angela Merkel had won her second-term in large part because of the failure of the Social Democratic SPD to turn-out their traditional core [...] Continue Reading…

Berlin news – [Merkel-2] Cabinet Appointed.

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Three weeks of protracted negotiations between the CDU conservative party of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the liberal Free Democrats ended today with all the parties signing a coalition deal emphasizing tax cuts.

The moderate liberal-conservative coalition of Christian Democrats and Free Democrats: the very model of a modern centrist democracy, agreed on €24bn of tax cuts in an attempt to stimulate [...] Continue Reading…
