OTA-Berlin Zehdenicker Straße 5

These two apartment buildings were purchased from the state by some private and institutional Hamburg investors in the year 2000, with a view to renovate and rebuild them. This in keeping with the historical reconstruction guidelines laid down by the city, which allow for some modern features like metal balconies, but keep the general outward appearance and gist of the original building.

These buildings are typical for the period. They were built in the 1890’s and follow the “L” shape of the typical working class family dwelling of this period, with both “L’s” formed around a common courtyard or <<Hof>>. Due to heavy bomb damage during the war many of the surrounding buildings were damaged or destroyed.

There were voices in the former DDR regime which wanted to level all the old buildings in Mitte and build modern apartment blocks. Either for lack of money, or because of the fore-sightedness of enlightened city planners this was never carried out, however the renovations and repairs were done piece-mail with the buildings on the larger more visible streets receiving the most attention.

Presently Zehdenicker 4 is almost completely renovated inside and out. The other tenants are themselves owners or family of the owners.

The OTA-Berlin properties at this location have been obtained on a long-term lease basis and have undergone extensive renovations in the autumn of 2004.
